Ukraine simply needs to improve to compete against Switzerland

June 26th, 2006 | By: Andriy Korol | 27 Comments »

That is the message everyone on the team understands. Blokhin was simply not impressed with that victory over Tunisia. Rebrov recently said “Our performance against Tunisia wasn’t good enough to be completely honest”. I don’t know what is going on with our team sometimes. One day they get destroyed, the next day they bring it and the third day they play like a team that shouldn’t even be in the World Cup. We all were disapointed in their last match and now we are biting our nails hoping to beat Switzerland. Why is that ? If somebody told us a month ago that we were to play Switzerland in the Round of 16, we’d be so confident that our boys will handle them easily. Yet the Ukraine that has been showing up on the pitch is not the Ukraine we all have come to know in the recent months. We can discuss all the bad strategical moves the team has made, how our defense lacks or offense is not doing its job, or midfield is not moving up. It seems that Ukraine just needs to get their head into the game and play their asses off, listen to the coach’s orders, play as one unit, do not get nervous and just give it their 150%. If Ukraine puts up the fight they are capable of, yes, we will beat Switzerland. No more nonesense at this point.

well, a bit too negative for my taste, I think we have just as good of a chance as the swiss, I dont think our team is ‘weaker’ than the teams u mentioned, they get a bit nervous, but this is a team capable of beating anybody.

Hi my Ukrainian friends! Don’t be so humble. I think you have a solid team - which just had some stage-fright so far. But now you reached your goal and you can play without pressure. You definitely have a shot against us. Don’t forget: you still have Europe’s best striker on the pitch.
I think, over-all we (Switzerland) have the somewhat more levelled and compact team. But don’t give it up without a fight! ;)

Looking forward to tonight! Let it be a good game and may the better team win! And offer some Vodka to the next Swiss you meet!

We’ll be just fine, mark my word.

And 2 Andriy.Rybalchenko:
I don’t quite share your pessimism. Sure we can play in a strange manner… but look how far we’ve gotten. In qualifiers some games were exactly like ones we’ve played so far on this tournament, and yet we magically won our group. Have some trust, as I’ve said before, we are good ;)

Oh and one more thing. Swiss are just as good as we are.. or as bad as we are, the way you put it. In my opinion both Ukraine and Switzerland got lucky during their last matches (what’s up with refereeing huh).

Thanks to the Swiss dude for giving us that extra good feeling. Even though I dont think that Swiss people even exist. I have never met one myself. Look at it this way guys, 3 more games. Thats it…just 3 and we can make history. I’ll admit I havent kept an eye on the Swiss but I do belive Adrian from Australia is correct, we have one of the best Strikers on the pitch, and the rest of the guys arent bad.

Like someone mentioned before, it depends on which Swiss team or which Uki team shows up.

Sing with me to the tune of “Sche Nev Merdla Ykraiina”

Ukraine’s glory hasn’t perished, nor her freedom
Upon us, fellow compatriots, fate shall smile once more.
Our enemies will vanish, like dew in the morning sun,
And we too shall rule, brothers, in a free land of our own.

We’ll lay down our souls and bodies to attain our freedom,
And we’ll show that we, brothers, are of the Kozak nation.

Honestly, saying “3 more games” and thinking that Ukraine have a chance to win the world cup is really unrealistic and I think it is associated with being in the world cup for the 1st time. Realistically we don’t have any chances to win, a powerful attacking side the likes of Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Germany, and Spain would destroy us (as the Spanish did), he just haven’t adapted to that play yet. As of me being pessimistic, in my opinion I am only being realistic. I’m sure there is nothing wrong with being optimistic, but I’m sure Saudi Arabian fans were optimistic before the Ukraine game. and The Tunisians hoped that they can ge t a win against us and instead they’re going home. But we were favourites in those games. I’m sorry, this is only the way I think, I don’t want to let anybody down. I wish good luck to our team tomorrow.

Andriy.Rybalchenko - I see your point. It’s sort of the same for the Swiss. We’re both SOLID teams, but not great. The interesting thing though is, that our side of the tableaux is the much easier one. If Germany somehow get’s past Argentina, there’s none of the attacking powerhouses on our half of the tablaux and we could only meet Brazil, Portugal or Spain in the final. This is the greatest chance for World Cup glory Ukraine, Switzerland and Australia could have hope for.

But first, let’s have great game tonight!

I see how Croatia didnt have any chances in 98, being there for the first time and all. And came back with bronze medals.

Everything is possible.

And I honestly think our team is yet to show what it’s capable of.

To win this WC, you will need Amarilla as referee in all the three remaining games! And Chevcheko must croll down three times per game to have as penalty as he can. You’d better loose this game , otherwise, the next one will be a big shame : 10-0

Marouene, for your information: Ukraine played Italy just before the World Cup. The score was 0-0 and Ukraine actually had the best scoring chance of the match. Thanks for your enthusiastic input.

Miguelinho, you’ve got two different rules, one for Torres (you talked about “momentum”) and another for Chevcheko (you can call him “monumentum”). This is not fair. Chevcheko deceived the referee and tht’s why Tunisia was sent off home.

Difference between Shevchenko and any other player (ex. Figo, Messi, Totti) is that he did NOT go down the moment he was bumped by 1.) the goalie, and then 2.) the defenceman. He fought through it (a la Wayne Rooney) and actually tried to make a play of it. The ref could have called either of thwe first two bumps, and I’m not sure which one he called, but he didm and that’s the way it goes.

A player on the completely opposite end of the honour and integiry spectrum, Figo, should be suspended for at least as many games as De Rossi for his head-butt. It happened while play was stopped, deliberate attempt to injure a player, as opposed to deliberate and in the heat of the moment attempt by De Rossi.

Ukraine is in good shape today… if they play their game, they will win.

Italy has a tough game today… let’s hope they don’t re-enact the Portuguese fiasco from yesterday with their diving, rolling, whining and ditry play.

Can someone hack in ignore for this board fast? :)

In the interview Sheva actually said that there was a penalty. And I honestly have no reasons not to trust him on that.

As for Spain - Ukraine penalty, I’ve said before, it was deserved as well.

Pedro,

We would have tied in any case, and Tunisia would have gone home in any case. And in any case there would be marouene(s) posting all this crap.

So long.

….

What is this LINEUP?

Nesmachnyi Vaschuk

Gusev - Tymoshuk - Shelaev - Kalinichenko - Husin

Voronin - Vorobey - Shevchenko

Someone tell me this is a mistake. We’re playing TWO defenders. five midfielders and 3 attackers? What??? What the hell is going on?

OMG….what a boring match, but in the end it was insane. The emotional roller coaster that fans were put on in the shootouts was CRAZY!!!!

Bring on the Italians….now I belive that anything can happen. I have had soooo many of my Polish, Croat’s and Serbian friends and co-workers come to our side that I belive 1/2 of Europe could be on our side now….who actually likes the Italians anyway…..other than the Italians.

What other team is loved by so many nations like the Uke’s are.

YKRAINA!!!!!!!!! 2006

Correction to my last post…..others who like the Italians,
1. Lovers of fine Pizza and Pastas, 2. Female Razor Blade Manufacturer’s
3. Cheap cologne creators
4. General Mortors, for if there were no Italians, the IROC would have been a flop.
