Ukraine defeat Tunisia by a hair to continue their adventure at the World Cup

June 23rd, 2006 | By: Andriy Korol | 22 Comments »

This was a highly disapointing performance by Ukraine. They won off of a penalty kick. I’m sorry but that penalty was deserved. They played a tight defensive game, did not take risks and tried not to get too many fouls. The Tunisians lost because they simply played too rough of a game. The second half was a nail biter, Tunisia could have made something out of it, but were unable to capitalize. Speaking of people who couldn’t capitalize, Voronin as usual created a few opportunities but was unable to find the net.

This is not the victory we all expected, but we’ll take it.

This was definitely a higly dissapointing performance by our team. We got lucky with the referee who was dreadful. But a victory is a victory even though Tunisia played better than us. With a performance like this I don’t expect us to make the

sorry, accidentaly pressed submit, with a performance like this one I don’t expect us to make the quarter finals, but for us just getting to the world cup is a big achievement! The loss of Rusol is huge, he’s our lead defender, I learned that we haven’t been playing Chingrinskiy because of an injury and I expect him to be playing in the round of 16, with success or not. We are just unable to play in the sun at 4:PM on a hot day, we only got into the game late when it got significantly cooler. A win is a win, we’ll take it indeed.

Well, bad game or not a win is a win. I am really happy for our boys.

At the same time, they have to play better in the round of 16. Today we get to find out whom Ukraine will face. Whatever the possibility our boys have done well to move on to the next round. Remember this is the the first time we have ever made it to the World Cup.

I second that. We did deserve this win, and we got it. We played better, but I think the game went according to Blokhin’s plan.

I don’t think ref was bad either. He did miss voronin’s hand, but it wasn’t intentional, would have been a free kick in the worst case, imho.

I had fun reading over Liveblog for Ukraine-Tunisia game, had a good laugh actually. I really love how US fans bring their discussions about refereeing and Ghana to other threads. It’s gonna be a while until they settle up. Oh well, more smiles for me.

Rusol’s 2nd yellow card scared the hell out of me. Not good at all.

For Andriy.Rybalchenko:

I don’t think Tunisia played better than Ukraine. Ukraine actually had more chances to score, and it’s pity as always that we waste so many good opportunities. Just a usual match, it was pretty much expected to be like that, very much Blokhin style.

Either way, we are in 1/8, and currently that’s all that matters.

I dont know…. we didnt play today… we gave away the ball just like we did with spain its just tunusia couldnt get it in the net… I dont know if that was the plan or what.. ill take the win but if we play like this next game……

I was suprised to see that our defence didnt make to many mistakes and tunisia didnt run through us…

I was somewhat disapointed with 2 defenders sitting out, but finally this way Blokhin can bring in Chergniskiy and Yatsenko, which we’ve all been craving to see what they can do

We are in the 1/16, not the 1/8.
Andriy, I learned the Chygrynskiy was only not playing because he had a slight injury, in the 1st two games, otherwise he would have started versus spain. However then vs tunisia we switched to a 3-5-2 and didn’t need him anymore, now that rusol is out and Yezerskyi is injured he might be playing in the round of 16. But Rusol is our lead defender, it sucks not to have him! Good luck to our team anyhow!

We are now starting a clean slate against karma - 4 goals and questionable PK. :)

I am satisfied though - and asmuch as I want my team to win I doubt this will happen. Thanks YKPAIHA for making it this far…

It looked as though Ukraine was trying to play a possesion type game, they wanted to always have the ball and weren’t overly concerned about scoring on the net. I think that’s a rather bad decision becasue we tried that in the first half against Spain it would seem, and that game didn’t turn out so well either and this one could have been the same. In my opinion, voronin has to be replaced because he coughs up the ball 9/10 times or else shoots way over the net. I was actually surprised to see him hit the net today! And too bad Kalinichenko had a bad game today, i was really excited for this guy to play and he just kept sending balls too deep. Oh well! None the less Ukraine came out with the win and thats more than alot of people can ask for, for this being their first world cup ever!

please, it was 73 F, i dont know wat that is in celsius. However, it was a perfect day. We were just lazy, and took Tunisia lightly. I think Blokhin should start Milevski. As soon as he got in, we almost scored 2 goals. Happened in the SA game too. Hes a playmaker. START HIM!

I’ve read some things and heard from commentators that the penalty kick for Ukraine was not deserved: they say Shevchenko tripped over his own feet, but IMO the foul and penalty kick was not for tripping (a tripping would have likely earned a yellow card in addition to the penatly), but for the Tunisia’s defender who was holding Shevchenko by his arm, preventing Sheva from scoring.

Ukraine played good at the 1st time, but second time was really
disappointing: 10-Tunisia looked better then 11-Ukraine.
Shevchenko’s comment after a match about playing in the second time:
“We played easy and simple, played for result - it is all because the great responsibility the team feel; and it’s a great, really great, achievement for the team first playing on the Worldcup to get the round of 16…”
About the penalty, as Andriy Shevchenko said, commenting the
match in evening football tv-program, it was deserved -
the Tunisia defender knock off Shevchenko’s step making him fall, there was a contact in a penalty area and the penalty was the result.
The luck of Ukraine that the arbiter didn’t notice how Voronin
played hand in penalty area defending Shovkonsky’s net.

The 26th will be really hard day
with Switzerland…

it’s the player’s job to sneak in little things like handballs and fouls behind the ref’s back, if a player does it successfully without the ref noticing, he’s a sly player, so theres no point in what ’shoulda’ been a card or a penalty kick, it shoulda but it didnt, those of you who watch hockey know that goes on all the time also, it’s part of the game, oops

tunisia ’shoulda’ gotten a second penalty kick on them btw, the ref either didnt see it or pretended he didnt see it, so it didnt happen, oh well
