This is just the beginning

Sheva

We lost 3-0, but anyone that watched that game would agree that this score does not do us justice, it was a good game and could have been a lot closer. In the end, the better team won, they outplayed us in the first half and deserve all the respect for their victory. I wish Italy luck against Germany, you won the game without any controversy, it was undesputed that you got the best of team Ukraine.

I am happy about the way our boys played. They will no longer be known as Ukraine the debutants, but Ukraine the quarter finalists. Nobody really visioned Ukraine to win the world cup on their first try anyways, few saw us even getting to the quarter finals, but they acheived that. Our fans show some real class when they support their team with so much enthusiasm after a loss. The team showed class by bowing out and not making excuses, for example, not picking a fight with the Italians at the end of the game.

You may be asking why I chose the title of this blog to include the word “beginning” instead of “the end” (like other bloggers). This truly is the beginning of our international tournament football. We tested out the waters in this tournament and the water was good. We have much to look forward to, starting with the Euro 2008 up next and World Cup South Africa, 4 years from now. I’d like everyone to keep comming back here daily and maybe we’ll have a quick Euro 08 preview discussion (oh yes, Italy is in our qualification group). I wish this blog site wouldnt close and come to an end, I would talk about team Ukraine year round, because theres always something happening every 3-4 months.

In the meantime, I’m gonna be following the rest of the world cup and maybe blogging some “Ukrainian opinion” on the remaining games :O)

Personally, I’d like to see Germany take it.

Oleg P is actually agonizing :P
He can type all he wants.. but the fact that Ukraine is independent and going away from Russia further with each year is truth. Just another pro russian cry-baby. Ahh.. so many :P Makes me smile.

Cheers to everyone!

And for littleguy :
Sorry to dissapoint you, but US team is nothing comparing to Ukraine. You can’t even compare the two. Ukraine won hard european group in order to qualify for wc2006. US gets a more or less free ride each time. Ukraine has #10 ranked domestic league in the world. And US has…?? Sorry, but I can’t take your comment seriously. Abu is pretty much your future. Export material, since you can get 0 at home.

Oleg P

You don’t know sh*t.

Quote from Wiki
“The USSR national football team was the national football team of the Soviet Union. It ceased to exist on the break up of the Union. The Russian team should not be considered as a continuation of this team; a large percentage of the team’s players came from outside Russia, mainly from Ukraine. ”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USSR_national_football_team

On a sidenote, thanks to everyone, and bye ;)
I am not going to waste my time on this pro-russian sh*thead anymore :)

dear oleg. P,
it has brought to my attention that you are obviously a russian that is jealous of ukraine because we are independant and we actually have a soccer team (its not our fault your country sucks)
so because of your rotten jealousy i suggest you go into a corner and f*** yourself and if that does not satisfy u then just think of how we do not care about your useless comments.

Andriy Rybalchenko,
i agree with you 100% about this stupid oleg person…..stupid russian horny toad

I didnt delete Oleg P’s comments because I wasnt in the mood to create a martor out of him and ’silence’ him. I like your nationalism statistics, where do you get them btw ? Donbas is mostly Russian ? Even if that was the case, Edmonton is mostly full of people that feel Ukrainian, should Edmonton now become part of Ukraine ? Or howaboot Peremishl’ in Poland ? Do you read the quotes from the players of Ukraine after the game ? They all say they are proud of their nation and that nation is Ukraine. You’re right, many of them are from the East… Eastern Ukrainians, which is part of Ukraine, which was a powerful empire called Kyivska Rus’ once, at a time before Moskovshchyna was began to exist after some gypsies all gathered in one place and decided to make it a country later. For that matter, lets have Ukraine take Peterburg back, this was a city built by Kozaky.

My point is, most of what I said was sarcasm, it was nonesense, but this is the sorta of crap you weave in our forums, trying to get our blood to boil. My friend, I believe you missed the beginning of that Italy-Ukraine match, I believe there was a message about racism sent out. They were referring to people like you.

Thank you, dont bother posting, I will delete all future posts of yours now.

Well done Ukraine! I watched all their matches from the beginning, and supported them at first because they were underdogs. But I got so wrapped up in their triumphs (and disappointments) that I am now a diehard Ukraine fan, even though the only link I have to Ukraine is one friend who was born there but absolutely hates football :D

Euro 2008 will be tough because of Italy and France being in the same group :( But I will be following the progress of all the lads in their respective careers and hope to see them reunited as an even stronger team.

P.S. @ Lada:

I think Shovkovskiy did great, even if he let in that Zambrotta goal. It was nerves, and maybe hesitation from that broken collarbone which got him.

Also, regarding the Kalinichenko/Man U rumour… I don’t think it’s true. The Russian media picked up on some comments posted on the internet. It was the ‘official’ site, but the article was just a bit of fun for fans and not serious. The tabloids picked up on it and it’s been madness ever since. :(

Anyway, Man U is a bit of a hellhole, so let’s hope Kalina gets an offer from somewhere less image-oriented. Or that his contract at Spartak is improved or something.

Peace, everyone.

Oleg P, you are wrong in saying “only the right-wing Ukranian nationalists from west Ukraine who actually speak Ukraine” [sic] are proud of being Ukrainian. I am not from western Ukraine, nor am I a ‘right-wing’ anything. I am not even ethnic Ukrainian by blood, and my first language is Russian (although I speak fluent Ukrainian as well). But I was born in Ukraine, consider myself Ukrainian and am proud of it. So there really exists a distinct sense of national identity among the Ukrainian people and this is what defines a nation whether anyone east of Ukrainian border likes it or not. As to the ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine – if we start allowing parts of sovereign countries to split off on the basis of their population ethnicity, where will the world be? Importantly, where will Russia be, with all the oil and mineral rich regions populated by national minorities? I don’t see Russia hurrying to allow independence for Chechnya.

Respectfully
Nic

Lada, I hope the rumours about ukrainian players signing up for big European clubs are wrong. Experience shows that having the players dispersed among foreign clubs actually weakens the national team. The US team can attest to it, so can many African teams, where most players play in European clubs. The Italian team has several ‘blocks’ of 4 or 5 players that play for the same club. That means they train and play together or against each other through the season, which creates better cohesion. What Ukraine needs is the same that US needs – better domestic league and more encouragement for the youth to play football. As is, Ukraine doesn’t even have a spare goalkeeper that is even half as good as Shovkovskyi, who is already 31. He still has a couple of years left in him hopefully, but what if something happened to him? And yes, I think Shovkovskyi is great, and you can’t blame him for all the errors of defence.

Cheers
Nic
