The Blokhin Interview

April 4th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 1 Comment »

Legendary player and current Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin goes one-on-one with an interviewer on the main FIFA site. This is a particularly good quote:

“We definitely want to progress beyond the group stage. If we can reach the knockout phase, then the tournament will be wide open. So, yes, we’re setting our sights high. Qualifying was obviously a great achievement, but as a coach that is not enough for me. We have to continue pushing forward.”

If you ask me, Blokhin is one of the more underrated coaches in the World Cup. He has won everywhere he has coached. I think when he leads Ukraine far into the tournament this summer there will be some clubs in Europe who will be interested in his services after the World Cup.

I’ll agree that he has been very successful… he seems to be very good at motivating teams he coaches and getting them to follow his plan. I think if there are no mis-steps in the group round, Ukraine has a legitimate shot of getting to the last 8, and from there it’s one game at a time.
