Spain v Ukraine

June 13th, 2006 | By: Andriy Korol | 14 Comments »

Wednesday is the big match we have all been awaiting. The game is at 3pm German time, if you are in Ontario, that will be 9am, the rest of you can figure out your time zone.

So how will we fair against the Spaniards ? We have looked at every aspect of this game on paper. On paper, it looks good, we have a very strong team, with or without Sheva, we displayed this in our qualifications and capitalized on all our friendlies before the tournament. I suddenly am nervous about how things will go down, this game opener will decide our fate, are we a World Class team or does Ukraine still need to work on some things ? Will we destroy or be destroyed ? Our defense was an issue in the past, that seems to have been cleaned up, not to mention we have an excellent goalie in net. Spain are a great team who often ‘chokes’ when it counts, so which Spain will come on the pitch tomorrow ? I think it is frightening that they have had such bad luck in the past, this is a team that is out to prove a point, out to send a message, can they be handled by the newcomers Ukraine ?
We have the youth, we have the experience, the offense, the defense, all shaping up to be the making of a great team, but things often don’t work out as they do on paper, this will be a very interesting game.

my prediction still remains 2-0 Ukraine, lets go UKRAYINO.

You bring up every important point. If my Spain shows up, I shudder to think what they can do. If the usual Spain shows up, we squeak into the second round. Maybe.

Ukraine one of good team. with good striker “Andriey” but for me spain will beat them at least 4-0. they have strong and fast team, even brazil don’t have this strange.at the midle u will see the diffrence.also at the defensive position.

2:2

We tie at 7 points and goal difference will determine who wins the group.

draw is a more realistic result for this match. I don’t think it’s going to be a high scoring match. If Ukraine scores first, Spain will level it. If Spain score first they will keep the lead. 7 points for both teams in this group? What do you think it’s a picnic? Wake up and smell the reality, my friends! It’s not an easy group.

With sheva or without, I think Ukraine is capable of beating spain with ease. A 4:0 prediction from a previous poster is unrealistic, that’s pretty much more goals than spain has scored in all previous friendlies. Nah. They really don’t demonstrate that kind of quality football.

Personally I’d go for a draw (perhaps 2:2, perhaps simmilar to the game played 3 years ago in Kiev, during euro2004 qualification) however I have a feeling late goal will decide the fate of this match.

/me is setting his alarm clock for 8am

i will have to watch the replay of the match tomorrow. there is work i have to do in the morning that can’t wait. but that is not here nor there.

Of course as a Ukrainian I thin Ukraine should win. However, both teams are very good. Ukraine has the ability to win. The same can be said about Spain. Spain has some very good players.

I think the result will be similar to the result of one of the matches of Euro 2004, either 2-1 Ukraine or 2-2.

I am not checking the score till I have a chance to watch the game. One way or another tomorrow we have an interesting match on our hands.

Indeed Petro ;)

I spent about 3 hours looking for a bar which opens before or at 9am, (and which is relatively close to my place) so I could watch the damn game. Since well, i ditched out my TV a few years ago. Eventually I even managed to find one. Which is definitely good news for me. Now I only have to check my alarm clock 10 times, or even better, stay awake all night.

I wish I could watch these with some of my friends who managed to find time, get tickets for this game in Leipzig (or even both). Or at least somewhere in Kyiv, or better yet, Lviv with cheering drunk crowd ;)

But oh well, an Irish pub will do for now :)

Having followed every single game of ukrainian team for the past decade (crying, laughing, swearing, cheering, begging, praying, the usual drill, you know) I feel confident in our boys and have the best expectations.

So good luck to our team, sympathies to team spain, and I hope you guys enjoy this game, because I certainly will.

My prediction: Ukraine by a goal.

But this is going to be a very tough game. With Spain, one never knows which team actually shows up to play. They certainly got the talent. But so does Ukraine. And I give Ukraine slight edge because of Blokhin - his knowledge of the game and experience will help these young guys carry through.

Ukraine is my “2nd” team, besides the US. I really hope both do well, but at this point, obviously expect more from Blokhin’s squad.

Funny, i have butterflies in my stomach since waking up this mornig, as if i am going to play myself against Spain.
My prediction is 2-1 for Ukraine. I have been waiting for it for 15 years since Ukraine became an independent state…
