Shevchenko injured!
The moral leader of the Ukrainian national team, Andriy Shevchenko, has sustained an injury while playing for Milan.
‘Andriyko’ will be out for 25 days, and will just be back in time for the World cup. Ukraine have proven to be an incredibly dangerous side with Shevchenko, but what non Ukrainians don’t know, is that - We are just as dangerous without him. Sheva is only a great thing, but we do have 10 other guys who can carry the load when Sheva is hurt, and when Sheva has an off night they still do it. (See 1 - 0 win vs Denmark in Ukraine, 0 - 1 win vs Greece in Greece, and many, many more). A full article, from www.uefa.com, can be seen below.
Andriy Shevchenko is a major concern for Ukraine ahead this summer’s FIFA World Cup after it was confirmed that the AC Milan striker twisted his left knee during Sunday’s 3-2 win against Parma FC.
Lengthy rest
The 29-year-old limped out after just eight minutes of the Serie A fixture at the Stadio Ennio Tardini and there were fears that the injury would require surgery. Those fears have been allayed following a scan today but Milan’s medical staff revealed that the 2004 European Footballer of the Year will have to rest for about up to four weeks in order to recover from his injury.
Title charge
Shevchenko therefore faces a race against time to recover on time for Ukraine’s World Cup debut on 14 June against Spain. There are more immediate concerns for club side Milan, who will be without their talismanic top scorer for their last league game against AS Roma on Sunday. It is a must-win match for the Rossoneri, who currently lie three points behind Juventus in the race for the Scudetto.
Even if he was to not play in the World Cup (which he will, this is only ‘worst case scenario’) the only thing required to make our team play to the maximum of their potential is him being present. Shevchenko being present in the locker room lifts everyone to another level, and surprisingly, is much more affective then him simply playing on the feild, for Ukraine anyway.
My only concern is that when he does come back to the lineup, he won’t be used to his Ukrainian teammates (as it will be 6/7 months since he’s played with them), which could cause problems for the entire team.

Living in the US, I only get to see Sheva and Milan play once or twice a year because soccer (football) is not very popular in the States. But after Milan’s win over Lyon, ESPN 2 aired a SportsCenter commercial featuring Shevchenko. I was really surprised that of all soccer (football) players in Europe, ESPN paid Sheva to do the commercial! I was really happy to see a Ukrainian player get that kind of recognition in the US. Unfortuantely, probably 90% of the people that saw that commercial do not know who Sheva is.

I am very disappointed with Sheva’s Injury. I was eagerly waiting for my country’s first partcipation in the world cup in Germany. I am hoping that the team will be successful without him.
