Shev Confident he’ll be Ready

May 24th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 5 Comments »

Andriy Shevchenko says that he is recovering nicely from a late season knee injury and he is hopeful to be ready in advance of Ukraine’s group play matches,

“My condition improves day by day,” said Shevchenko. “I have to be careful not to speed things up as there are certain things that you cannot hurry. “When the doctors examine me again, my condition and my World Cup hopes will be more clear.”

Fingers crossed that he continues to gain his fitness. He’s going to have a huge World Cup!

I think he will be fit and in tip top condition for upsetting Spain in the first game… remember they drew 2:2 in Ukrain and lost only 2:1 in Spain in qualifying for Euro2004. It’s time for a win!

I also believe he will be ready to play Spain. However I dont think he will be the one upsetting them. If they start him, Im putting my money on Andriy Vorobey, he hasnt produced any goals yet, he’s due.

as a side note, other teams in our group seem to be experiencing some pre-WC injuries as well.
Spain defender Michel Salgado suffered a muscle strain in training on Tuesday.
Saudi Arabia forward Sami Jaber is rumored to also be injured, seriousness uknown.

From one of the postings on the main site today…

“Spain’s fans received some bad scan news today when they learned that a scan revealed that defender Asier Del Horno could be out for the World Cup thanks to a tendon tear he suffered during training.”

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that they can get a decent result against Spain and then keep their focus on the other two games in the group.

Winning this group could mean avoiding France and Brazil in the 2nd round and QF!
