June 19: Ukraine vs. Saudi Arabia

June 18th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 9 Comments »

The World Cup starts now. Even if the standings don’t say so, we must come away with three points from this game. There’s no time for excuses, just results. If our boys need any more motivation here is a quote they should remember:

Saudi coach Marcos Paqueta: “Ukraine are a weak team and we have to try and get to them early. We have to take advantage of the way the fixtures have worked out for us.”

I’m not sure what Paqueta is smoking but whatever it is it has clearly affected his judgement. Saudi Arabia has done little in the World Cup and I would be very surprised if they do anything on Monday. It is our time to shine.

Here are the projected lineups. Keep in mind that Vladislav Vashchyuk is out with a red card suspension and Oleg Gusev is doubtful with a knee injury.

Saudi Arabia (4-4-2)
21-Mabrouk Zaid (34-0); 2-Ahmed Dokhi (69-4), 13-Hussein Sulaimani (98-3), 6-Omar Al Ghamdi (39-5), 4-Hamad Al Montashari (33-6); 14-Saud Al Khariri (35-12), 8-Mohammed Noor (64-22), 18-Nawaf Al Temyat (57-13), 16-Khaled Al Thaker (15-2); 9-Sami Al Jaber (161-44), 20-Yassir Al Qahtani (44-33)

Ukraine (4-4-2)
1-Oleksander Shovkovsky (69-0); 5-Volodimir Yezersky (25-1), 6-Andri Rusol (24-1), 13-Dmitro Chigrinsky (0-0), 2-Andri Nesmachny (50-0); 14-Andri Husin (65-9), 4-Anatoli Timoshchyuk (56-1), 8-Oleg Shelayev (20-0), 21-Ruslan Rotan (20-3); 7-Andriy Shevchenko (65-29), 10-Andri Voronin (33-4)

Hehe. Paqueta’s “The Ukraine is weak” crack sounds like he’s been watching a few too many episodes of Seinfeld.

He is actually denying he made these comments. It may have been a misquote. I think the German papers have been playing some tricks lately. Vaschuk, for example, told the Ukrainian press that he never complained about the frogs by the hotel. Oh man…who knows what to believe?

Words are words. We need to see action on the field.

It is merely a tabloid news, he did not say it. I don’t think any coach would say such thing about any opponent. Like Miguelinho said, he might’ve been misqouted. It will be an exciting game because both teams are in desperate need of points. Looks like at the end it will be a tie game.

blohin is retarded I swear, he’s not playing rotan or chingrinskiy. He’s playing Vyacheslav Svideskvi instead of Chingrinskiy, he has absolutely no faith in young players, all the other teams are always playing young players while blohkin doesn’t play anyone until they are about 23. He is retarded.

DO NOT CALL THIS MAN RETARDED. The young players will get their chance, they will! But in a must-win situation, Blokhin was right to rest them. Experience is a must under pressure.

With that said, great game today. Nice possession style, building from tne back. Rebrov was amazing, and Sheva is no longer the world’s most expensive statue. Also: an honest ref with open eyes!!

Good game, but need to be even better in defense against Tunisia.

The man knows what he is doing, He got us this far, he is making most if not all right decisions, its just our team didnt show up for the spain match. Although im still worried about our defence, The first half of the saudi game I closed my eyes for some of those plays by the defence…
