Current domestic situation in Ukraine
The Ukrainian league gets better, and more exciting in every year, and this year, was ranked 10th best in the world. Currently in Ukraine, the domestic situation is this :
First and second is almost as tight as possible, between FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Shakhtar Donets’k. Dynamo are 2 points ahead of Shakhtar, with two games remaining - Including a May 10th game in which Dynamo host Shakhtar at the Lobanovsky stadium in Kyiv. The battle for third, which is also the battle for the final European spot available in league play, is tight as well. FC Chornomorets’ Odesa are 4 points ahead of FC Illichivets’ Mariupil’ with each team having two more games to play. All Chornomorets’ need is a win in their next game, or a tie and an Illichivets’ tie or loss - But with their next game being against Shakhtar Donets’k, in Donest’k, even a tie will be incredibly hard, nevermind a win in the intimidating Donets’k, who are one of the best attended clubs in Eastern Europe.
The Ukrainian cup final is not as exciting, but still quite interesting. FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Metalurh Zaporizhya meet for the first time in history in the cup final, and Dynamo will either take their 9th Ukrainian cup, or Metalurh will give its fans something to party throughout the night about - Their first Ukrainian cup win in history. You might remember, Metalurh Zaporizhya had more then a few impressive results in Europe a few years ago, most noteably against Leeds of England - But since then have gone down hill. They are a mid table Ukrainian premier league side, but with a new stadium in the works, a solid fan base, and a return to Europe on the horizon next summer (as, since they meet Dynamo Kyiv in the cup final, who have already clinched a champions league place in Ukraine, they get an automatic passage to Europe next year) - Things look bright for the “Kozak’s “.
