Aragones is wacky as usual and Ukraine receives yellow flowers of bad luck

OUTSPOKEN coach Luis Aragones caused red faces at Spain’s World Cup training camp by rejecting a welcoming bouquet of flowers he apparently saw as an insult to his virility.

Aragones, who was fined $5000 last year for racist remarks made about Arsenal’s French striker Thierry Henry, embarrassed even his federation officials when he waved aside the flowers from a German welcoming committee.
“There’s no room up my a— for the hair of a shrimp, never mind flowers,” was his bizarre reaction.

In March last year, Aragones, 67, was lucky to keep his job after calling Henry a “black s—”.

Aragones, who took over as national coach in July 2004 after Inaki Saez stepped down, made the remarks to Arsenal and Spain’s Jose Antonio Reyes in October 2004.

He insisted the comments were meant to motivate the Spanish player by comparing him favourably with club teammate Henry and were not intended to be offensive.

It took the Spanish Football Federation five months to fine him the equivalent of a day’s wages.

A month after Aragones made his comments, England played a friendly in Madrid and black players Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright- Phillips received racist abuse from the crowd, for which the Spanish federation was fined $111,000.

ANDRIY Shevchenko and his Ukraine teammates were greeted with yellow roses — a bad omen — when they arrived at the World Cup on Friday.

In Ukraine, where flowers and their colour send specific messages, yellow roses mean goodbye and are considered an ill omen.

“Oh no!” a Ukrainian journalist said on seeing the yellow roses at the airport. “They only just arrived and the flowers are saying goodbye.”
—————

well actually I looked up the meaning of yellow roses, there are other things that they symbolize, among them are friendship, joy and freedom ! In Germany, yellow roses stand for Jealousy/Envy ! I wouldnt say that is such bad luck considering it is Germans who are giving us the yellow rose and if you are looking into meanings, they are jealous of our team Ukraine.

But in the end, Im sure the reason we got yellow roses is because our national colours are blue and YELLOW

Luis Aragones rejected a welcoming bouquet of flowers because he apparently saw as an insult to his virility. Next time give him a small bottle of ginseng, or a dozen oysters.

Aragones is a bit crazy to start with. So it doesn’t really matter what he does. Really I am surprised that he is still coaching the Spanish national team. They haven’t really acheived anything worthwhile in the last couple of years.

Having said that, flowers are just flowers. They are not a sign of anything at this point. The national colors of the team are yellow and blue. At the same time, the FIFA banner i saw at one of the matches today had yellow text on blue background. These, gentlemen, are the colors of this World Cup. It is nothing more than that.

By the way, I was talking about the cup with someone today and they said that Spain might intentionally play for a draw. The reason for is so that they dont have to face Brazil in the second round. That is an interesting conjecture. We shall see how thing thing plays out.

Im not sure I understand, if theam that finishes first is more likely to not face Brazil in the quarters, so why aim for a draw and not a win ? Unless their goal is to play defensively and keep us at 0-0 because they have no confidence in scoring :O)

Brazil is an intimidation, they are no more a threat than half of the other countries in the cup, they are the favorite and that is it, strange things happen in the World Cup, theres a good chance Croatia may finish first in that group, they can handle Brazil….

anyways, what difference does it make who we play, to be the best you have to beat the best !

Brazil - just an intimidation? Haha… Perhaps.

It would be a reasonable strategy to play for a tie actually, but not a very honorable one. I’m sure most of the Spanish players would prefer to prove themselves against the best, given the choice. It’s a question of pride, after all.
